indulging my iCrush
some time ago, i developed a bit of an infatuation with all things apple. maybe it started when my husband unexpectedly bought me a nano a couple of years ago...? i'm not really sure what triggered it. as a kid our first at-home computer was an apple IIc, and then later the IIe, so i guess i was "trained" on apple, but i soon "graduated" to PCs and have used nothing but since high school or undergrad.
anyhow, awhile back, i started watching the apple commercials on purpose. like, we'd be parked in front of the FiVo, and as i was fast-forwarding through the commercials, i'd stop if i saw an apple commercial. i was totally suckered in by those two guys and their droll little conversations. heh. somewhere in there i got the aforementioned nano, and i really liked it. that was my first exposure to iTunes, and the whole thing was generally very easy to figure out, even with no experience.
within the past year or so, my interest in mac stuff really amped up. i was particularly enamored with the idea of the iPhone (like most of america, ha ha), and even though i didn't plan to get one (i am totally unthrilled with the idea that you have to use at&t as your carrier), i was dying to find someone who would let me monkey with theirs. when i finally got my hands on one, i was so publicly exuberant that two different people took pictures of me(!), and ever since, i've pestered people to let me test-drive theirs. i'm basically hoping and waiting for the day when they open it up and you can use it with whatever the heck carrier you want. *keeps fingers crossed tightly* i love the idea of being able to replace my phone and my palm pilot with one device, plus get so much more in the bargain. also: it's so pretty!!
interestingly, i had a friend at school who was experiencing this same bizarre iCrush right along with me (unbeknownst to me, at first), and when we realized that we both were fantasizing about going the mac route, we proceeded to totally rile each other up, constantly. we both had (coincidentally) gotten new hp laptops the summer before, and we both liked them, and felt like it would be silly to replace them so soon, for no good reason other than, "i wanna." but we still riled each other up anyway, and eventually he decided that he was going to go for it. i told him that i would live vicariously through him, and he was cool with that.
he bought his macbook pro this past summer, and i made him tell me all about it in juicy detail, and i asked him to show me all kinds of stuff. i continued to daydream about getting one, but decided to be satisfied with living vicariously through him for awhile. i looked on the apple website occasionally, but for the most part i shoved it to the back of my mind, and just watched the commercials when i saw them. hee.
well, on thursday morning, my husband mentioned out of the blue that he knew someone offering up a macbook pro for a pretty good deal. it was in pristine condition, and we had dibs on it if we wanted it. i was rather overwhelmed by the prospect, because we had never even really talked about me getting a mac. we did a bunch of research that day, went over to the apple store 10 minutes away, and hemmed and hawed a fair bit. in the end, we decided it wasn't as perfect of a deal as we thought, but proceeded with plans to get me one anyway. whee!!
and so, tonight we ordered a refurbished (supposedly this means that it's in perfect wonderful beautiful like-new condition, but $400 cheaper, yo) macbook pro. i'm still having a hard time processing that i'm getting a mac (squeeee!) but i know once it gets delivered i'll be raring to go. i'm thinking of attending a couple of the free workshops at the apple store, so that i'll feel more prepared and less confused when i actually get started. i'm not stupid, but i'm so used to the PC way of doing things that i want to make sure i get a chance to ask all of my dumb questions. (like, for instance, i had no idea how to scroll on a mac trackpad. once i asked, it was easy enough, but i was totally clueless just test-driving in the store.)
a few minutes ago i got the email telling me my order has entered the shipping process, so you can bet i'll be tracking that sucker constantly until it arrives at my front door!

How exciting! Be sure to keep us updated.
As soon as you get the machine up and running like you like, take a few minutes to do a hardware test.
It's usually on Disk 1 of the included software. Insert the disk and re-boot your Mac while holding the "Option" key.
This will let you know if there are any factory defects that may cause your Mac to go wonky in a week or so. It's better to know now.
Don't be afraid to use your free 90 Days of phone support. Call for everything!! It can save a trip to the Apple Store.
When you do have to go in, make an appointment on the website and skip the line.
Oh... and I have software recommendations, too!!
Like I said... it's very exciting!
