I know how it feels I went vegan and my family wasn;t happy with Tofurkey. My son isn't so now we eat the Turkey and I pray , hope, belive it can be reincarnated and have a do over. LOL I hope it works out that you have some good times.

Hi,
I can relate to your dilemma, and I sympathize. My mum is such an animal lover--in fact she is the reason I am the way I am today--and yet the issue of veganism is such an awkward one between us. She never comes out and says anything, but she will make the odd comment about how difficult I am to accommodate. I get the feeling she is humoring me, hoping this will pass. I suppose this complete lack of interest in my being vegan and my motivations for being vegan, is what bothers me the most. In contrast, my boyfriend's mum is fascinated. I don't get the impression she is considering being vegan, but she asks me sincere questions about the issue, and takes advantage of opportunities to eat the way I do when she can. I think it all has to do with insecurity. My mum feels threatened, because her position is questionable in her own mind. I think at one point I was in that place myself when I had vegetarian friends.
Anyway, it might be hard, but you should go to both dinners. Show them you are not ashamed, that you are proud of your choice. Do it for the animals. you know, I often think it would be easier to tell people at social gatherings that I can't have animal products for health reasons (seems to go over so much better), but what would that do for our cause?
Whatever you do, know that you're not weird, you are strong and compassionate.

i can definitely relate. i end up bringing my own meal to my family gathering. on the plus side, it sounds like your dad and stepmom are incredibly gracious hosts!

thanks for sharing your stories, you guys! it helps, believe me. i did end up going to my grandma's, and it was okay. Tere, you're right--i need to remember to hold my head up and be proud of who i am in situations like those.
